At this point of time 90-95% of Maize is grown under film in Ireland.

The use of film allows maize to be sown 2 – 3 weeks earlier than conventional open crops.  Sowing under film creates a micro climate when the plant can be challenged during the first few weeks.  This helps to develop a much larger root system which will increase yield and bring harvest date forward.  Trial results and experience have shown that certain maize hybrids are more suited to sowing under film than others.  Planting dates and growing location should determine the maturity of hybrid to be sown.  Other features such as high relative yield and standing ability can identify the appropriate hybrid to be grown.
